Vibe coding for CMOs in education.
An education CMO fills a class, a programme or a platform, and the funnel ends with a student who may be a minor or a borrower of federal aid. The tension is that enrolment marketing rewards bold claims about outcomes and aggressive retargeting, and both are regulated in education in ways they are not anywhere else.
What is true about software in education before you write a prompt.
Schools, universities, training companies and edtech businesses all have the same shape of problem: a learning platform that does most things and a long tail of tools it does not. Executives are building the tail: an enrolment workflow, a parent portal, an assessment tool, a course marketplace. Most of them hold data about students, and some of those students are children.
Student data has its own laws
FERPA in the United States, GDPR in Europe, and rules about children's data almost everywhere. A tool that stores a student's name, grades or attendance is regulated, and a tool used by under-13s has additional consent requirements.
Parents, students and staff see different things
Role-based access is not optional. A parent must see only their child. A student must not see another's grades. The AI will build a single login unless told otherwise.
Accessibility is required
Education tools are often legally required to be accessible. A page built fast with no attention to screen readers or keyboard navigation can be non-compliant on day one.
Term start is your launch day
Enrolment tools and portals get their year's traffic in one week. Hosting and caching have to be ready for it, and a failure that week costs a term's trust.
What a CMO in education builds first.
01The inquiry to enrolment pipeline
A form that routes each prospective student to an admissions counsellor, syncs to Slate or the student information system, and reports which inquiries applied and enrolled. Built first because it replaces the spreadsheet admissions runs on.
02The programme pages with outcomes
A page per programme with completion, cost and employment figures pulled from the institution's reported data, with the source and the year beside each number. Claims have to match what was filed.
03The campus visit and open day booking
Booking, reminders by email, and a check-in list for the day, tied to the inquiry record. Visits convert better than anything else in the funnel.
CMOs in every industry tend to build the same four things. The CMO page has that list.
The programme page claims a placement rate nobody filed
The AI wrote a persuasive programme page and included a placement rate it computed from a spreadsheet a recruiter shared, with no methodology and no year. Federal misrepresentation rules treat an unsubstantiated outcomes claim as grounds for enforcement and student loan discharge claims. The retargeting tag on the same page was also following applicants under eighteen around the internet without the consent their age requires.
The pattern underneath is the one every CMO hits: every email and phone number a visitor typed sits in a database the AI set up with default settings. The admin page has no login, or the export URL has no check. Marketing just became the source of a data breach.
What a safe build in education usually runs on.
Builds run on a standard web stack with Postgres, single sign-on from the institution's identity provider or a properly scoped login for parents and students, integrations with the learning platform and the student information system through read-only keys, and accessibility checked before launch.
What changes for a CMO in education.
A CTO in your corner reads every public page and every form before it ships. Where the data goes, who can read it, whether the keys are hidden, whether the page will survive the launch traffic. You still build at campaign speed. You just never have to explain to legal why the lead list was public.
What CMOs in education ask.
